Lucia Celebration at Augustana Lutheran Church:
A favorite Swedish holiday tradition is tied to the saintly figure of Lucia. She is the “bearer of light,” who illuminates the darkness of winter each December 13th. The American Swedish Institute celebrates the Saint Lucia tradition with a traditional pageant on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008 at 2:30 p.m.at Augustana Lutheran Church, 11th Ave. S. and 7th St. in downtown Minneapolis. Ticket holders for the Dec. 13 performance may show their tickets for free museum admission to the American Swedish Institute that day. The Lucia Celebration features songs in Swedish by a volunteer youth choir. The legend of Saint Lucia will be told and the Institute’s 2008 Lucia will be presented. A Nordic Christmas Celebration:
Each Nordic country celebrates Christmas with its own traditions. Join us on Saturday, Dec. 20 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to explore traditions of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Finland at ASI’s “A Nordic Christmas Celebration." Visit the Nordic Christmas rooms in the Turnblad mansion, where representatives (some in costume) will tell about their country’s holiday traditions. Throughout the day, musicians will perform in the museum. Enjoy lively flute music, vocal groups, and folk instruments. This special event is a festive way to learn about some of the various Nordic Christmas traditions. The event is free for ASI members and included with museum admission for nonmembers.

Julglädje:
Julglädje is a Swedish word that means “Christmas happiness.” Extend the joy of Christmas by visiting ASI with family and friends after the holiday rush. The program is open to all ages and is especially for families. Julglädje features Ross Sutter and friends in a program of lively Swedish songs, old-time favorites, games and stories. Ross will sing, share some holiday memories and invite you to add your voice to a sing-a-long or jump to your feet for a simple Swedish folk dance. Sutter plays a variety of instruments, including guitar, dulcimer, and button accordion. Julglädje is included with museum admission, and free for ASI members.

Julgransplundring:
In Sweden, the end of the Christmas season is marked with a special “going away” party. Julgransplundring (the plundering of the Christmas tree) brings Christmas to a close with song, dance and one last hurrah! Join us for ASI’s Julgransplundring on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. The julgran (Christmas tree) is the center of the fun. Chase the winter chill away by singing and dancing around the tree. Create a party hat to wear, make a Swedish heart basket and “fish” for party favors. After one last line dance, children “plunder” the tree of its edible ornaments. Enjoy light refreshments, including fruit, cheese, knäckebröd (crisp bread), cookies and hot beverages. Cost: $9, ($7 ASI members), free for children under two with an adult; advance registration is required. Contact: Jenn Stromberg (612) 871-4907 or jennifers@americanswedishinst.org
